Name: Sean Bell

Job Title: Engineer

What is your background? I've been within the machinery industry for around 12 years, started out as an apprentice working on plant machinery and access. My passion began to grow further for access/lifting as it presented more challenges to me and that path has now brought me to HLS.

What do you love the most about what you do? Everyday is different, I like going out to visit sites and meeting customers. I love the challenges that are presented by working with a diverse range of equipment and solving problems or finding solutions. I also enjoy developing my knowledge and keeping up to date on legal and health and safety aspects as well as technical knowledge of machinery.

What's impressed you most about HLS so far? It’s a fast growing business with big ideas and there’s a lot of emphasis on the team culture, which I really like. Everyone at HLS is passionate about keeping people safe when working at height which is obviously a value which I share.

If you were a MEWP/access platform what would it be? I would be a rough terrain cherry picker because I can reach any height, battle through anything and I rarely break down. (Well sometimes, but only when I'm not in work mode).

What are the worst things you've seen in your career as an engineer? Over the years I have seen people taking risks either when I have been to visit customer sites or other engineers. I have seen people climbing on platforms with no harness or fall protection and even people standing on forklift forks to work at height. Bad habits can creep in when people work at height on a daily basis as they may either become complacent or they focus on getting work done faster. It’s scary to see when you think about what can happen when things go horribly wrong.

What do you get up to when you are not working? Socialising with friends, spending time with my loved ones. I also love watching and playing football, well, mainly watching football these days because I’m not as fit and going carp fishing. I enjoy fishing all over the UK and abroad.

You can catch Sean out on the road carrying out planned service/maintenance visits and repairs for our customers.
