2022 Key Business Challenges Series

Written by Laura Hemsley | Mar 4, 2022

In October last year, the British Chamber of Commerce released its quarterly recruitment outlook, which showed 70% of businesses were struggling to find staff – even those hardest hit by the pandemic, such as retail and hospitality.

Clearly, increasing productivity is a critical goal in the current climate. In our last blog on resource we looked at how investing in upgrading equipment to optimise efficiency can see significant increases in employee productivity.

But what are the other responses and opportunities? One possible response might be to cut back on expenses such as training and professional development. However on the flipside, this is actually one of the areas to increase investment in the current climate.

The power of comprehensive, quality training can lay a foundation that supports the highest levels of productivity and safety on a daily basis.

Training and developing a positive company culture has a number of additional business benefits in addition to increased productivity, such as reduced downtime and staff turnover, all ultimately boosting your bottom line.

Companies that invest in training and development come out far ahead of those businesses whose management strategy is to cut down. Potentially outperforming the competition by 20%.

The statistics speak for themselves!

Ongoing employee training not only helps cultivate talent from within your business, but can also breathe new life into old tasks. Plus, retraining current employees is less expensive than recruiting new ones.

Most importantly, training employees can also prevent small, basic mistakes, which when in the context of working at height can prevent a workplace accident.

Falls from height are the main cause of fatal accidents and major injuries in the workplace.

In the UK, there are on average 555,000 non-fatal accidents, of which 44,000 are estimated to be falls from height.  3.9 million working days are lost to non-fatal workplace injuries.

In Summary

A proactive approach to training and workplace culture can help your business to overcome labour shortages by helping to retain and engage employees, boost productivity, whilst improving safety and compliance.
