When it comes to working at height, safety and compliance are critical. HLS understands the unique challenges businesses face when managing work at height operations, whether for everyday maintenance, projects, or specialist access requirements. We are experts in The Work at Height Regulations 2005, as well as LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations). Our role is to help you interpret these regulations in the context of your own workplace and ensure you remain compliant while keeping your workforce safe and productive.

HLS offers a full range of onsite surveys and risk assessments, tailored to your needs. Our experienced surveyors will assess your work environment, review training and maintenance requirements, and use this information to recommend the best equipment, processes, and working methods. Whether you require remote support, a focused task-specific assessment, or a full site-wide risk assessment with health and safety audit, we have a solution that fits.

By downloading our Site Survey and Risk Assessment Options Guide, you will gain insight into how we support organisations across multiple industries to plan work at height safely, efficiently, and in compliance with UK safety legislation.

Why a Work at Height Site Survey Matters

Both employers and employees share responsibility under the Work at Height Regulations for ensuring that all tasks performed at height are properly planned and carried out safely. The consequences of poor planning can be severe: preventable accidents, injuries, downtime, and even legal action.

A professional site survey helps you:

  • Identify risks before incidents occur.

  • Select the most appropriate equipment for the task.

  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations.

  • Improve efficiency and productivity by finding the safest, fastest way to complete work.

  • Justify decisions and create documentation to support safety audits and inspections.

Our surveys are not one-size-fits-all. Depending on your needs, we can provide guidance remotely, send a surveyor onsite for a focused inspection, or carry out a full-scale risk assessment and health and safety culture audit.

What a Site Survey and Risk Assessment Covers

A working at height survey typically includes:

  • Reviewing the task or tasks to be carried out (whether routine or new).

  • Identifying risks highlighted by near misses, incidents, or ongoing concerns.

  • Considering efficiency improvements and productivity gains.

  • Recommending training, servicing, and compliance actions.

  • Delivering clear documentation to help you make informed decisions.

This process ensures that the correct access equipment is chosen, that your staff are properly trained, and that your operations are both safe and cost-effective.

Which Option is Right for Me?

HLS offers four levels of survey and assessment, depending on your situation:

1. Remote Support and Advice

    • We courier a laser measure to you, along with an in-depth questionnaire. By completing it and returning photos, our office-based team can provide tailored guidance.

    • Report: While not a full report, you’ll receive recommendations for equipment, products, or further investigation.

    • Ideal for businesses needing quick guidance.

  1. 2. Task-Specific Onsite Assessment

    • Up to 2 hours onsite with a specialist surveyor to address a particular task or problem area.

    • We measure, check restrictions, and discuss your requirements.

    • Report: A document detailing our findings and recommendations for reaching the area safely.

    • Perfect when you are struggling with access to a difficult location.

    3. Full Site Survey and Risk Assessment Report

    • Up to 5 hours onsite with a surveyor, working with your engineering, hygiene, and management teams to fully understand your site requirements.

    • Report: A comprehensive risk assessment report, with detailed findings, risk levels, and solutions backed by justification.

    • Best for organisations needing full compliance support and detailed safety planning.

    4. Full Site Survey, Risk Assessment, Work Study, and Health & Safety Culture Audit

    • From 2 days onsite, with our specialists liaising with multiple teams.

    • Report: A detailed summary covering risks, work studies, audits, culture reviews, and productivity assessments. While extensive, this report provides powerful evidence to help you gain traction internally and improve safety culture across the organisation.

    • Recommended for large-scale operations and businesses with complex compliance needs.
